And make sure your humorous illustration is actually funnyk. An illustration should throw light on the preaching text and not diminish it, according to Fry Brown. “When the illustration comes to me, how does it connect to who I am? I always say, ‘exegete yourself,'” she said. It could be they are searching online for the meaning of a reference the preacher just made. “When we preach, we tend to pay attention to the person not paying attention to us,” she said, including those looking down at their phones.
